Little did old Henry Ford envision his invention on four wheels and self-propelled as the beginning of the Ford’s RS cars. He probably thought there would be some revisions to his original designs, but never in his wildest dreams did he realize how magnificently his Fords would keep up with the high technology of the 21st Century.

The team at Ford Motors have been meticulous and careful in the creation of the RS and the first one to make headlines was the Ford Escort in the late 60’s featuring the Escort twin cams followed by Ford Escort RS 1600 in the early 70’s. RS signifies the Rally Sport and the Ford Escort stepped forward with the first Ford 16 valve overhead camshaft engine. It boasts of another 1st, which was it’s assembly at the New Advanced vehicle operation factory in Aveley in Essex. The Ford Sierra RS Cosworth was one of the more popular cars in the UK. It went on sale in 1986 and carried a top speed of 150mph – the little Sierra was noted for its performance. Out of 5,000 sold, 500 were converted to the RS 500 and although there weren’t any real external changes - the 500 dominated the motor sports for several years.

Ford Rally Sports remain popular throughout the world – they have remained a car to contend with since the 60 do and rumor has it that a high performance Focus RS is in the offing for 2009.
